Our story

We're building this from inside
the journey.

Maggie, Vit, and Alex
Maggie, Vit, and Alex at the farm — head of livestock inspection in his element.

We're Maggie and Vit — both tech workers, but that's where the similarities end.

Maggie is the cook, the reader, the writer; she reads every review and checks every detail before making a decision. Vit is the comedian, with a gift for turning the mundane into something hilarious. And then there's Alex, three and a half, who has inherited all of Vit's energy and appointed himself head of livestock inspection at our favorite local farm.

We always knew we wanted Alex to have a sibling. Life threw us a detour, and we came to surrogacy — not as a last resort, but as the right path forward.

Why we're building KoalaCare

The surrogacy industry runs on information asymmetry. Intended parents pay $30,000–$40,000 in agency fees, and a meaningful share of that is for knowledge — which states protect you, what insurance actually covers, what questions to ask a clinic, what red flags hide in a contract — that doesn't need to live behind a firewall.

We paid a five-figure retainer to one agency and waited nine months without a single candidate being presented. We read every contract line by line, called every clinic ourselves, sat across the table from attorneys and benefits administrators, and slowly assembled our own picture of how this industry really works. Everything we learned, we're publishing here.

KoalaCare is also a product. We're building a journey portal to handle the parts of an agency's work that software can do better — document coordination, milestone tracking, an AI assistant that can actually answer “what does my contract say about that?” So more of the money you spend goes to the surrogate carrying your child, and less goes to a middleman.

What you can expect

  • Plain-language, agency-neutral writing about U.S. surrogacy — legal, financial, medical, logistical.
  • Honest cost breakdowns, including the line items agencies don't put on their website.
  • Real-time updates from our own journey, with all third parties anonymized.
  • Tools you can actually use, not lead magnets disguised as content.
Important

We are not lawyers, doctors, or licensed surrogacy professionals. Everything here is informational, drawn from our own research and experience. Please run important decisions past a reproductive attorney and your IVF clinic.
